Why I created a blog

Its been many years since I first created this blog. It has remained true to Essbase and related information over those years. Hopefully it has answered questions and given you insight over those years. I will continue to provide my observations and comments on the ever changing world of EPM. Don't be surprised if the scope of the blog changes and brings in other Hyperion topics.

How healthy is Smart View

Have you ever wanted to know what might conflict with your Smart View install, how about setting the timeout values without having to  figure out hex codes and fiddle with the registry?
While it has been out for a while now (I think over a year and a half) most people don;t know about the health check built into Smart View. the smart View development team has given us something very useful, if we just knew it existed.

To get to Health Check, from the Smart View menu, select Help, then select Health Check

Once you are in Health check you will notice a bunch of really cool things like system information, Hardware info, Excel add-ins, com add-ins Registry info, Smart View options. and some known excel issues.   Not only can you see settings, but you can update some of them. For example, one of the best things is being able to update the time out values in the registry. Note, your options will look different than mine depending on what add-ins you have and what your registry entries are set to.

If you click on the Recommended settings you will get a screen that looks like:

Clicking Yes will put in these default settings. You then need to click on update settings to apply them. I do not know if it will actually update the Registry items if you do not have admin access to your PC as I do have it and can;t check that.

If you don't like the default settings, maybe you need a longer time out. if 15 minutes isn't enough for you, in the right hand panel, (in red above), you can change the values to whatever you want.

There you have it, a better way to manage those pesky settings  that have bothered us for so long. Thanks Smart View Dev for putting this in for us. People spread the word on this to make everyone's life easier.
